After the response I got over my DALEK 2002 redesign I decided to work on something I've been thinking about for a while. A new console room that has elements from all the consoles and rooms seen on screen, and a few elements from consoles created by the fans (props and 3d models). Of course the main focus of the room is the console. I started with a design I had made a long time ago. It looked more like a ST:TNG design with a black touch screen panel. I always loved in Doctor Who when the Doctor would scramble about throwing levers and switches, then drop out of frame as he takes some panel off to get to the guts of the console, so I made the new design with that in mind. Many knobs and doohickeys to play with. I'd estimate that this console is 15% Hartnell style, 10% Pertwee, 10% Baker (later style and that was Tom Baker by the way), %10 secondary console room, 20% Davison (AKA the blinking mushroom of death). %5 the TVM console (the one I dislike the most), 10% from other peoples consoles, and the rest (20%) is my own creation.

The console is surrounded by removable grill plates on the floor. Under those are 6 silver connecting arms that can be opened to get to the cables within. Under that is a brilliant white light that represents the Heart and power of the machine. When in flight I'd imagine that the light pulses very gently.

I'll try to explain some of the other things that I did along the way.. If I can :-)

The Console from the top. From whole thing would be 7 feet wide if it actually existed. I made it so 19 inch LCD could be used, as well as a few 14 inch (if any one wanted to make it for real that is.:-)

Centre column. I know most of you call this the Time Rotor, But its not. The Time Rotor was a part on the console pointed to in the story The Chase: Flight through Eternity. 99% of the people call the column the time rotor. I actually figured out how to make this so there are no wires visible.

When the TARDIS is at rest the column completely closes up (see other picture). The centre area rotates clockwise going forward in time, counter-clockwise going backwards and the crystal hourglass in the centre of it all has a light that cycles telling you how fast you are moving through time.

The activation knob (3) brings the centre column up to the starting position (its the ignition). Then the De-mat / Re-mat Levers (2) start the column moving up and down. The De-mat / Re-mat Levers are from the Pertwee console. The Coordinate display (9) changes to so the temporal setting and the destination (None of that humanian era crap here)

The idea for Access Crystals (28) was from the Castellans desk in the 'Invasion of Time' and they allow access to certain ares of the matrix (If the Timelords allow the operator to have access that is) (30) is a 3-D hand gesturing interface device to rotate and manipulate the info displayed on the computer screen (make a twisting motion to open a file). (20) was the background of the Matrix in 'Arc of Infinity'. The Removable Computer modules (21) slide out. Data Transfer Controls (23) Controls the Speed, Bandwidth of outgoing and incoming data transmission. Allows TARDIS computers to communicate with computers of almost any tech level at maximum efficiency. (24) - Data Module Lock In Switches: Opens and closes the relay to an inserted module. When switched off, the module may be safely removed. (29) - Monitor Controls - Changes the contrast, gamma, and even colour spectrum of the monitor image so that it may be viewed by almost any species in almost any situation, whatever the visual spectrum or lighting requirements of the individual. (31) - 3D Hand Gesturing Control Selection Buttons: Basically a set of mouse buttons that, but more of them to cope with a 3D display..and .. well green lights look cool and alien :-). (32) - Data Routing Switch: Allows the operator to route data from any of the other console stations into the computer for detailed analysis.

The Radiation Detector has been updated to show 9 different types of radiation, as well as having a history to it. (47) Scanner Presets: Programmable switches that allow the operator to quickly access readings for particular types of environmental phenomenon that he/she regularly looks for.

The routing panel (52) was seen on the TVM console. I also remember the 5th Doctor and Nyssa re-routing the communication signals from the Cybermen to the navigation system in Earthshock, So I figured that this would allow that but much faster. Allows the operator to convert and route the output of any system through any other system. Useful for many purposes, including feeding a comm signal to the nav ciruits for automatic tracking, or power through the comm circuits for transmission of power to an exterior source.

The Low-level TARDIS control was seen in the War games to control the SIDRATs. The Chameleon circuit panel (54) opens up and the control panel slides out like it did in Logopolis. (49) - Rest Weight/ Mass Controls: The TARDIS normally adjusts the Weight and Mass of the Real World Interface to match whatever surface it currently rests upon. Using these controls, the operator can change those factors, as well as the inertia and opacity of the RWI. This can be useful for making changes that help the TARDIS blend into it's surroundings (such as by sinking it into the water of a stream as opposed to letting it bob up and down in the water shaped as a very large boulder) or to keep it from being affected by basic environmental forces (say keeping it from blowing away in a hurricane). Errors can often lead to disaster, so its usually best to let the TARDIS handle this on it's own. You don't want to sink to the centre of the earth after all...

The homing beacon hole (62) is where the homing beacon sits (Full Circle) or where the Key to Time locator went into. The Time Warp Vector Display (61) is the device that displays Time loops (Claw of Axos) or warp-ellipse (Mawdryn Undead). The Vortex Monitor show the status of the Vortex (Or opening credit backgrounds :-) as well as other objects in the vortex. The Engine power controls and displays (68) shows and controls the output of the dynamorphic generators that are converting power from the eye of harmony to usable power. (64) - Power Modulators: Allows for fine control of power output to each of the 4 main systems and functions as pre-sets to (69): The Main Power Control Levers. (69) - Main Power Control Levers: Each of these controls the power output of one 4 systems... Navigation/Propulsion, Life Support, Defenses and Secondary Systems i.e. everything else including sensors, the main Computer and the electric kettle. There are three states, Off (no power is being diverted to those systems), On (power levels are as pre-set on panel 64: Power Modulators), and Boosted (any excess power is funnelled into any systems switched to this setting, which may take them above and beyond the levels from the Power Modulator pre-sets.) Using these, the operator can quickly switch off power to non-essential functions to augment any system which requires a power boost. (74) - Life Support Control Sliders: Allows the operator to change the temperature, atmospheric levels and content, lighting etc. of the console room. There are similar controls in every room in the TARDIS for individual adjustment, although they can be over-ridden by the ones on the control console. (75) - Override Switches: These are emergency switches for extreme situations and are usually locked to avoid accidental switching. They all have fuses that may be pulled to keep them from being switched over or back. The first is the Failsafe Switch, which anchors the TARDIS to it's present location and keeps it from dematerializing (if in normal space-time) or rematerializing (if in the vortex). The Second is the Emergency Switch which takes the TARDIS out of the normal universe altogether (as seen in 'The Mind Robber'). The third is the Time Vector Over-ride, which temporarily detaches the Real World Interface from the rest of the TARDIS, leaving it as a shell resembling whatever form the chameleon circuit had previously adopted and dumping any passengers currently in the console room into it (as seen in 'The Wheel in Space'). This last one will automatically switch back over after an amount of time pre-set by the operator, after which the rest of the TARDIS will be accessible by the RWI once again.

Main Door control

The overhead monitor switch (80) creates an overhead preview like in the TVM, but more like the wrap around wall like display that was in the Minbari warships in Babylon 5. The control trackball (95) is from the time-scoop in the 5 Doctors. (88) - Mixing Board: Adjusts the frequency, energy level and transmission energy type of outgoing signals. Allows the operator to fashion the comm signal into whatever form is needed for almost any type of communications technology, from the most primitive radio signals to ultra high tech FTL communication to brainwaves.
